This course intends to provide students with an overview of the current state of theories and studies of second language acquisition (SLA). The course will discuss and examine key issues in second language learning and teaching from the interdisciplinary perspectives of linguistics, psychology, and education. The purposes of this course are (1) to help students improve their understanding of how learners learn a second/foreign language and about themselves as language learners; (2) to help students learn about how to become more successful language learners of English as well as of their second foreign language; (3) to serve as the theoretical foundations for training in second language teaching.

課程目標
This course intends to provide students with an overview of the current state of theories and studies of second language acquisition (SLA).

What is ‘second language acquisition’? First, in this context ‘second’ can refer to any language that is learned subsequent to the mother tongue. Thus, it can refer to the learning of a third or fourth language. Also, ‘second’ is not intended to contrast with ‘foreign’. Whether you are learning a language naturally as a result of living in a country where it is spoken, or learning it in a classroom through instruction, it is customary to speak generically of ‘second’ language acquisition. So, Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a systematic study of how people acquire a second language (L2).
